What makes synthetic wigs different?
Synthetic hair wigs are made from plastic fibers (acrylic) that are made to replicate the appearance of human hair. The acrylic is heated and manipulated to be made into strands which will serve as individual hair fibers.
These wigs are so well made that if you purchase a good quality synthetic lace front wig, you really cannot tell that it is not human hair. It can genuinely look like your natural hair!

As beautiful and affordable as these synthetic wigs are, some caution needs to be taken when styling the heat resistant ones. If you continuously use heat on these wigs they can become scratchy in texture and also become permanently frizzy, which is not an ideal situation!
So if you want to style your heat resistant synthetic wig, be sure to keep the heat setting on low, as this will definitely help the lifespan of your beautiful wig.

Wig Terminology
If any of the above terms came across a little confusing because you aren’t too familiar with them, keep reading to familiarize yourself with some key wig terminology so that you are ahead of the game! Here they are:
Hair Grade
When we speak about hair grade, we are referring to how thick the hair is at the ends. The thicker the ends are, the less likely they are to get tangled or shed. The grading system starts at grade “A”. That is the lowest grade, a wig with this grade has thin and spindly hair strands. The higher the grade, the better.
An ideal hair grade is 8A, anything less will have a short lifespan, especially when treated with dyes or hot hair appliances. The thicker the hair, the better the quality. If you want to purchase a wig that is 18 inches in length or longer then you should stick with 7A and 8A hair grades, even higher if the wig is curly.
Hair Density
When we speak about hair density, we are referring to how thin or thick the hair bundles on the wig are. Basically, how much hair is used on each wig. This does not mean the volume of the hair. A straight wig with the same density as a curly wig will not have the same volume.
When shopping for a wig and deciding which hair density to go with, it is important to note that 120% density is considered the average density of human hair. So anything above that will be slightly thicker than your natural hair. Most human hair wigs are 130% density whilst the premium ones are often 150% or higher, they still give a natural appearance but with added fullness.

Virgin Hair
Virgin hair is basically untouched hair. Hair that has never been chemically or color-treated at all. If the hair has been permed, bleached, undergone color treatments, highlights, dyes, or even ombre hair then it is no longer characterized as virgin hair. Even if these treatments were done years prior.
It is important to note that virgin hair wigs will always be human hair, but not all human hair is virgin hair. Stylists and hairdressers love working with virgin hair because it is the strongest as it has never been damaged by chemicals. It is also easier to dye virgin hair.
Glueless
This refers to the fact that the wig does not need to be secured using glue or adhesives. Wigs of this nature come equipped with adjustable straps and combs to secure it on your head. This is ideal for people who are allergic to glue, are trying to protect their hairline, or are simply not familiar with using hair glue.
Bleached knots
Let’s start at the beginning when wigs are made the hair bundles are hand-sewn onto the lace or wig cap. The hair bundles are secured during this process through a knot. These knots can look like really small seeds. In order to get rid of the appearance of these knots, they are bleached or lightened. This makes the hair on the wig seem as though it is growing from your actual scalp.
Lighter hair bundles (blonde or light brown) don’t necessarily need bleached knots. On darker hair, it is more necessary to have bleached knots to create a more natural appearance.
Pre-Plucked Hairline
A wig with a pre-plucked hairline will give you a more natural appearance because it gives the illusion of baby hair. One of the main challenges with wigs is that they have the same density everywhere, and they are uniform.
This is not the case for our natural hair. Our natural hair has unequal lengths, with the most density often being at the back of our heads. This is due to the fact that new hair is continuously growing, it’ll never all be the same length. Therefore, for your wig to be realistic, it needs to have the same effect.
That’s where pre-plucking the hairline comes in handy. If your wig does not come pre-plucked you can still pluck it yourself, and this could also save you money as pre-plucked wigs generally cost more.
Cuticle Aligned
This means that the hair on the wig has been aligned from root to tip in the same direction. This is done to replicate how our natural hair grows on our heads. When the hair cuticles are in the same direction they do not get easily tangled or matted. The hair strands also stay strong.
This gives the wig a glossy, smooth, and natural appearance. These wigs have a longer life span than wigs that are not aligned.
Single Donor
This refers to the fact that all the hair on the wig is from one person. This also means that all the hair strands on the wig will be facing the same direction as well as downwards.
Final Thoughts
You can never go wrong with a good lace front wig if you purchase the right one of course. An important point to take from this article is that whilst human hair lace front wigs allow us the freedom to restyle our wig to our choosing and they give a more natural appearance; synthetic hair wigs can also allow us to accomplish a natural appearance whilst wearing a wig, at almost half the cost!
