There’s nothing that really feels as good as getting your lace front wig fitted by your wig specialist. It feels almost too well done to be taken off at times, doesn’t it? Well, I’ve done some research on whether lace front wigs should be taken off daily and this is what I’ve found.
Lace front wigs can be taken off every day. In fact, they must be removed before bed or before you shower/swim. By removing your lace front wig, you are extending its lifespan by minimizing the wear and tear caused by your day-to-day activities. You are also protecting your natural hair as it can breathe without the wig cap’s constraints.
Let’s take a closer look into how to remove your lace front wig correctly, and the benefits to why you should regularly remove your wig.
How To Remove Lace Front Wig Correctly
We are already quite aware of how delicate our edges can be and wig adhesive can be extremely damaging on them if not used and removed correctly. Ideally, it is best to ensure that your edges are neatly tucked under a wig cap to avoid damage.
To remove your lace front wig safely, dip a cotton ball in adhesive remover and gently rub it along where you have secured your wig using glue or tape. Wait 2-3 minutes for the glue to melt under the adhesive remover, then gently peel back your lace front wig.
However, this isn’t always possible. When applying your lace front wig, try to ensure that you do not put adhesive on your edges or your hairline. However, the most important process is the removal of your lace front as it causes the most damage to your edges and hairline.
To avoid damage, ensure that you use an adhesive remover. Gently work at your wig glue using adhesive remover on a cotton swab until it loosens. Do not just pull off your wig, this will cause the most damage!
Benefits Of Removing Your Wig Daily
Many hair specialists suggest that the best way to maintain both your lace front wig and your natural hair is to remove your lace front wig daily. This is for multiple reasons, most of which relate almost directly to maintaining the health of your natural hair and scalp.
The main benefit of removing your lace front wig every day is that you are actually making your wig last longer. By removing your wig every night before bed, you are preventing sleep-related friction between your head and pillow from causing your wig to get dry and tangled. The same goes for removing your wig to swim and shower.
Everyone who wears lace front wigs generally does it to look good, and these types of wigs evidently have the ability to enhance almost anyone’s features.
The key question here is: Is it worth keeping my lace front wig on for long periods of time at the expense of my natural hair? Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why it is recommended that you remove your lace front wig daily:
Scalp Care.
Lace front wigs are one of the most natural-looking wigs when it comes to appearance on the market. This is with good reason. Generally, when lace front wigs are fitted, they are done very tightly to ensure that they are secure and appear as natural hair would, growing from the scalp.
However, this has some negative effects. It is an absolutely amazing benefit that a lace front wig can be fitted in a way that makes it appear as your natural hair, but it allows very little room for your scalp to breathe. Oxygen to your scalp is so essential for its overall health and the health of your hair.
Some of the negative effects, caused by your scalp having no room to breathe, are as follows:
- Tinea Capitis – Commonly known as ringworm, is a fungal infection presented as itchy and flaky patches on the scalp. When your scalp does not have enough breathing time and is concealed under the warmth of a lace front wig, that warmth can breed fungi and result in fungal infections such as this one.
- Yeast Infections – The tight fit of a lace front wig is bound to cause sweating, especially in warmer weather conditions. This build-up of moisture can lead to infections such as yeast-related infections that thrive in moist environments. These can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable.

Natural Hair Care.
Just like your scalp, your natural hair needs time to breathe as well. Keeping your lace front wig on for long periods of time can be extremely damaging to your natural hair and could result in a few bad side effects. Let’s take a look.
Here are just a few effects that keeping your lace front wig on can have on your natural hair:
- Breakage – Maintaining the health of your natural hair is extremely important, especially if you don’t plan on rocking your lace front wig 24/7. Keeping your lace front wig on for too long can lead to breakage of your natural hair, especially if you haven’t spent enough time properly styling your natural hair for wig-wearing.
- Receding hairline – Wig adhesive can also be extremely damaging to your edges and your natural hairline. If not used and removed correctly, or if your wig is kept on for extremely long periods of time, it can be detrimental to your hairline and could leave your edges non- existent.
- Balding – Ultimately, when there is not enough oxygen going to your scalp and hair follicles, balding is soon to follow!
Now that we have looked at some of the reasons why it is recommended that your lace front wig is removed daily, let’s take a look at further steps you can take to keep your hair and scalp healthy even if you don’t remove your wig daily!
Tips For Keeping Your Hair & Scalp Healthy
If we take a look at everything that we already discussed, the common factor is removing your lace front wig regularly. It does not seem like it is essential for your lace front wig to be removed every single day, but rather regularly enough for your scalp and your natural hair to breathe.
To keep your hair and scalp healthy under your wig, ensure that you wash, deep-condition, and moisturize your hair and scalp at least 2-3 times a week. To moisturize your hair and scalp, apply coconut oil or olive oil to your scalp (2 drops) and massage your scalp to increase blood flow for healthy hair.
Here is how you can rock your lace front wig for longer than a day:
Take a few days break every now and then.
The main point is to give your scalp and natural hair enough time to breathe. The amount of time obviously varies according to how long you have had your lace front wig fitted. I wouldn’t recommend having your lace front wig on for longer than a week. This is because most people generally need a hair wash after a week (this being the longest period without a wash) and by then there is already buildup of oil and moisture.
Removing your lace front after a week gives you the opportunity to properly wash your natural hair and your wig. Also, leaving your natural hair to breathe for two days minimum thereafter is essential. This is just to avoid damage potentially caused by lack of oxygen to your scalp and hair follicles.
Style your natural hair appropriately for wig-wearing.
One of the main reasons behind breakage of your natural hair caused by wig wearing, is incorrect preparation of your natural hair for wig wearing. Preparing your natural hair for wig-wearing differs according to the length of your natural hair. There is usually one main object: keep your natural hair flat enough for your wig to appear more natural.
However, this can be done very wrong and have extremely damaging effects on your natural hair. The best option is to braid your natural hair and make sure that it is moisturized and that the braids aren’t too tight and pulling at your roots and edges.

Final Thoughts
Taking a look at everything that we have discussed, it is quite clear that the choice is yours to make! I personally prefer daily removal of my lace front wig, solely because I am extremely OCD about the health of my natural hair!
However, this isn’t entirely necessary as it is just as easy to maintain the health of your hair without removing your lace front wig daily, by just following a few simple guidelines. Ultimately, it is up to what you are comfortable with and what best suits your lifestyle.
